Dowling Kimm Studios was established in San Francisco, California in 2001. Partners Julie Dowling and Lorissa Kimm met while working in the office of Michael Graves in Princeton, New Jersey, after completing their master's degrees in Architecture at Princeton University.

Julie Dowling moved to Madrid, Spain upon graduation, to work in the office of architect Juan Navarro Baldeweg. This experience solidified her appreciation for modern design. From there, she returned to Michael Graves Architect for 6 years to hone her skills in custom residential design. Answering a call for a life change and new experience, she then headed west to San Francisco, where she took a position as Senior Store Designer for Banana Republic, where she develop new store concepts and flagship store design.

Lorissa Kimm, after two years of graduate study at Princeton University, took a year to work in the office of architect Arata Isozaki, in Tokyo Japan. Her experience there instilled a passion for modern design and the Japanese reverence for nature and materials. She returned to Princeton to complete her degree, and went on to work for Michael Graves, where she focused on commercial and hotel design. From there, she moved to San Francisco and became a vice president at Brayton and Hughes Design Studio, where she developed the interiors for 5 star hotels and spas around the world.

With this diverse background, Julie Dowling and Lorissa Kimm bring over 20 years of combined experience in custom residential, hotel, retail, and interior design to their practice.
