Based in Georgetown, Barnes Vanze Architects, Inc. has had a long and successful design history in the Washington area and beyond.
Mr. Barnes, originally born and educated in South Africa, came to this country after working in London and Guatemala to attend the
Masters architectural program at Yale University. After graduating in 1983 he moved to Washington, where he joined Hartman-Cox, a
DC-based firm.
Mr. Vanze grew up in New York and attended Brown and the University of Virginia, and moved to Washington in 1977, where he joined
the Washington office of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Three years later he went to Hartman-Cox, where he and Mr. Barnes began
working together.
While at Hartman-Cox, Mr. Barnes' and Mr. Vanze's projects included commercial, institutional and academic projects in Washington,
DC, San Antonio, Texas, Charlottesville, Virginia and Wilmington, Delaware. Mr. Barnes and Mr. Vanze left Hartman-Cox to found Barnes
Vanze & Associates in 1989.
Over the past 20 years, Barnes Vanze has consistently grown from two Principals to more than a 28 person firm, with offices in Washington,
DC and Middleburg, VA. Timothy Clites, our Senior Associate, joined the firm in 1999 and heads up the Middleburg office.
The firm has completed several hundred projects of a variety of building types and scales. We have concentrated on high-end private
residential work, as well as, institutional and commercial projects, while continuing to expand our interest and expertise in other
building types. The firm currently has projects at various stages of completion across the country.

as well as excellent design solutions. We are careful listeners.
Our design solutions are not limited by predetermined stylistic responses. Rather, we avail ourselves of all possible architectural
solutions so that the appropriate design for each individual problem is realized. We work in many styles, determined by the context of
the project. These styles can range from historic or traditional styles to more modern solutions where appropriate and desired.
Our attention to detail extends beyond the building envelope. Our interior designers and architects work closely with our clients on
all interior and exterior details, including finish and fixture selection and custom built-in design, to ensure a seamless design process
from conception to completion. We also offer a wide range of additional interior design services tailored to our clients’ individual
needs, such as space planning, furniture selection and procurement, custom window and wall treatments, and full scale installations.
Barnes Vanze Architects, Inc. is a hands-on firm. A Principal and/or Senior Associate lead every project, assisted by an Associate and a
team of architects and interior designers. We are heavily involved in initial programming and budget development. Throughout the design
process, a close working relationship with our clients inevitably leads to a close personal relationship that continues through the
preparation of detailed drawings and construction administration. We maintain our hands-on approach through construction to guarantee a
high quality finished product and to help manage the construction process. |
